In today’s age, technology has flooded our lives with content. Caught in the mire are modern musicians who champion an art form that’s more widely distributed than any other throughout human history. And we, more often than not, overlook the music created by unfamiliar faces because it’s challenging. We’d rather have an easy listen, a known quantity to skim through while we think about something else.
Hearing is easy, but listening is difficult. Welcome to “Why We Like It”, where we rebuke the trends in favor of thoughtful analysis and underknown sounds.
“Dear Mom” — Gen Bello
How We Found It
Penning a heartfelt tune to her mother, NYC songstress, Gen Bello stole my heart in our SubmitHub inbox. Being an independent artist, Bello gets inspired in moments and starts crafting on her phone as soon as possible when she gets that spark. Constantly improving her craft, Bello shows that her writing can not only be catchy but have depth and personal flare.
Why We Like It
My mother is my hero. When describing my mother, I say I got my heart from her. After saying that, people just smile and understand. She’s an angel I revere and someone who I see as the guiding light of my life. So when I hear songs from artists that also project their mothers in their greatness, I can’t help but love them. Mother’s are people I thank with every breath I breathe because I know none of us would be here without them. So when I pressed play on Gen Bello’s “Dear Mom,” I was filled with joy and appreciation once again.
I definitely wanted my mom to feel appreciated. I wanted to share my love for her through music because music brings me almost the same joy that she gives me. I wanted my mom to know how special and important to me she is, that without her I would not be me.” – Gen Bello for CentralSauce (2020)
Bello describes her mother as selfless and someone who brings her out of darkness over the sparse, gentle production. Like the light she describes her mother as, it was as if I was waking up in the morning with the birds that are continuously chirping in the background. It’s a fitting backdrop for Bello to serenade listeners with her effortlessly gorgeous vocals. They’re not over the top by any means but they’re appropriate as a love letter. They’re controlled and show that she doesn’t have to belt and scream to highlight the emotional meaning of her mother.
I hope that this record is able to bring people close to their loved ones. It’s important to let the people you love know that you love and appreciate them because you never know when it’s going to be the last time that you can do that. I hope this record gives another way for someone to say “I love you to the people important to them in their lives.” – Gen Bello for CentralSauce (2020)
And while it’s all love, there’s a glimpse of breaking the norm as Bello describes working at a dead end job while she pursues her dreams as a singer. I personally related as I’m a writer and creator but appreciated my parents for letting me do what I wanted and at least go for it. And while they may not bear fruit at the moment, she promises to take care of her when they finally. Because at the end of the day, she sings “I owe, owe it all to you”, for all the sacrifices her mother has made and what she’s done to help her along the way. It’s genuine and relatable because I feel a lot of people want to help their parents and would if they could. So as I finished, I texted my mom and my dad to let them know how much I appreciate them and I hope other people do the same when they hear this song.
From Gen Bello
For this song, I received the beat first from a producer, moedoeisnice, and naturally started writing about my mom. I heard the beat and it just inspired me to write about her. The beat is super soft, and heartfelt. The birds chirping in the beginning of the song made me think of a garden. I thought about flowers blooming and that’s where my first line of the song came. From the first line of the song, I started building it around being nurtured, and how I’m grateful for my mom building me to be the person that I am today.” – Gen Bello for CentralSauce (2020)
