In today’s age, technology has flooded our lives with content. Caught in the mire are modern musicians who champion an art form more widely distributed than any other throughout human history. And we, more often than not, overlook the music created by unfamiliar faces because it’s challenging. We’d rather have an easy listen, a known quantity to skim through while we think about something else.
Hearing is easy, but listening is difficult. Welcome to “Why We Like It,” where we rebuke the trends in favor of thoughtful analysis and underknown sounds.
“B.A.M.N.” Ft. Various Jones — Unorthodocks & Solute
Listen On:
How We Found It
Our SubmitHub inbox has been graced by the smooth stylings of Unorthodocks and Solute, the Phoenix-based duo behind “B.A.M.N.” and its parent project, Flyest In The League. The collab album marks the first full-length release of Unorthodocks’ career while Solute had previously dropped Faction Coupe D’état alongside Say10. Offering an additional verse and production work on the song is Various Jones, whose latest release is “Windows,” a track released in the final quarter of 2021.
Why We Like It
A great track always displays a rejection of maximalism. The temptation is always in front of the artist, the need to display all that you can do in every track. It’s persuasive, but ultimately depreciates the quality of a song. Each track has its own specific requirements and the talent of a musician is found in understanding what a track demands. All three contributors to “B.A.M.N.” thread the eye of the needle cleanly.
The first instance of this necessary delicateness is the instrumental itself. Various Jones curates an arena with the perfect acoustics to house Unorthodocks’, Solute’s and his own vocals while being beautiful enough to appreciate the emptier spaces as well. Each rapper’s flow is a natural glide through the horn-laden beat with unique cadences, accents and styles offering verse-to-verse distinction.
Jones kicks off the track with calm, calculated rhymes which compliment Unorthodocks’ complex schemes and polished internals. Solute closes the track out through eccentric, bar-breaking flows that complete the spectrum offered by the track. The song, in part, owes its greatness to the rejection of maximalism, yet the level of skill on display here is still stellar. “B.A.M.N” is a fulfilling musical experience that teases the boundless potential of each artist involved.
From Unorthodocks
“Some of my greatest influences are MF DOOM, Roc Marciano and Cannibal Ox. I’ve always been fascinated by how great emcees put their words together and had a great appreciation for the technical aspect of rap.” – Unorthodocks for CentralSauce (2021)
