Technology has flooded our lives with content. Caught in the mire are today’s musicians who champion an artform that’s more widely distributed than any other throughout human history. And we, more often than not, overlook the music created by unfamiliar faces because it’s challenging. We’d rather have an easy listen, a known quantity to skim through while we think about something else.
Hearing is easy, but listening is difficult. Welcome to “Why We Like It”, where we rebuke the trends in favor of thoughtful analysis and underknown sounds.
“You Was Family” – Duckie Mr. Poetry
How we found it:
Every week, we receive hundreds of submissions through our portal from countries all around the world, from Malaysia to Serbia, New Zealand to Argentina. Despite this, we rarely get tracks submitted from the Caribbean – despite the region’s well-known love for music. Duckie Mr Poetry is the first time I’ve received a track from an artist based in The Bahamas and the talented Indie artist has got me desperately hoping it won’t be the last.
Why we like it:
Rarely do I come across a submission that checks all the boxes, but “You Was Family” does that precisely. Substantive bars infused with personality and that unique Bahamas flair? Check. Dynamic flows that balance speed and empty space? Check. Hook that sticks in the back of your head for days after a single listen? Check.
“You Was Family” is a rewarding listen for the foreground and background. You can focus in to appreciate the storytelling and the finer details of his multiple flows, or you can play it for the ambience and sing along with the hook and nod your head absently to the beat. This track is nearly as versatile as Duckie Mr Poetry himself and will be a mainstay on many of my personal playlists for the remainder of the year.
From the Artist:
This Single “You Was Family” is a tale of envy and betrayal, How others envy your success or how they interpret it. I wrote this song about one of my friends I was close with who always showed envy and hate towards my character or personal growth if it didn’t benefit him. Its an anthem most can relate to because people hide behind masks everyday with a hidden agenda.” – Duckie Mr Poetry
