In today’s age, technology has flooded our lives with content. Caught in the mire are today’s musicians who champion an art form that’s more widely distributed than any other throughout human history. And we, more often than not, overlook the music created by unfamiliar faces because it’s challenging. We’d rather have an easy listen, a known quantity to skim through while we think about something else.
Hearing is easy, but listening is difficult. Welcome to “Why We Like It”, where we rebuke the trends in favor of thoughtful analysis and underknown sounds.
“342” by LEIO
How We Found It
UK native, LEIO, is an accomplished and bold performer, with an eclectic musical heritage of country, RnB, soul, and blues. She infuses her own unique artistry with aspects of each, creating haunting pieces to be hummed for days. Following a musical sojourn in LA, New York, and Italy LEIO returns to roost in London, with her triumphant debut single, “342” gracing our Submithub inbox.
Why We Like It
When love is lost, every memory created with an old flame becomes corrupted and begins to infect the heart with each kindled ember of past affection. Sometimes memories flare up until the heart itself catches fire and burns someone from the inside out with thoughts of what’s been lost. So before the sparks catch and destroy everything precious, LEIO ignites the very path leading to those fond moments, preventing further pain by acknowledging the treasured memories are just that, memories.
Bridges burnt can never be built back up once the hearts behind suffer from second-degree burns. LEIO took me behind those passionate flames on “342”. The production is roasted slowly over beautiful strings that elevate the kindling being put together as the emotion steadily builds. As it continues to rise, it seems she’s throwing each memory into the blaze to avoid the aforementioned pain. Consequences be damned as each snapshot, photo, and video is wiped out by LEIO’s confidence moving forward.
These nights alone burn, but oh do I count the days. / These nights alone burn, oh then why do I feel this way.” – LEIO, “342” (2020)
Upon finishing my first listen, I couldn’t help but play it again immediately, vicariously searching every remaining fragment of bad relationships I had to finally burn away. This song is therapy given sound, releasing all the tears collected from sleepless nights and cleansing the listener alongside the singer. It’s going to hurt and it’s not going to be easy but once done, the path moving forward becomes so much clearer –even if there are a few scars left behind.
From The Artist
I actually had the idea for 342 some weeks before I got the chance to get into the studio and flush it out. The concept came to me at 5 a.m. in the back of an Uber – I think there’s something precious about that time of night when the city is empty. I wanted to write a song that felt perfectly nostalgic and full of heartbreak, but also in a weird way hopeful and magical. The meaning behind ‘342’ is whatever it means to the listener; a time and place where a relationship is perfect but outside of that it can’t really find its way into life… For me, it came from a place of loving someone greatly, but not being able to move forward together.” – LEIO for CentralSauce (2020)
