In today’s age, technology has flooded our lives with content. Caught in the mire are modern musicians who champion an art form that’s more widely distributed than any other throughout human history. And we, more often than not, overlook the music created by unfamiliar faces because it’s challenging. We’d rather have an easy listen, a known quantity to skim through while we think about something else.
Hearing is easy, but listening is difficult. Welcome to “Why We Like It”, where we rebuke the trends in favor of thoughtful analysis and underknown sounds.

Why We Like It
Summer is over. The wispy winds of fall are upon us. Colder nights and hungover days in the sun are long gone but as I’m getting a latte from Starbucks, I can’t help but think about all that summer had to offer. Which in retrospect, wasn’t much. This year’s summer was put on hold thanks to COVID-19 and I have a lot of missed memories that never were. So when I sip on my whiskey lace latte, I think of the past summer sun as a pause to think about previous summers and Just J’s “Stay (A Summertime Interlude)” captures that feeling for me.
“Stay” is a short song – simply an intermission on the time that once was. Its soft strings make me think of a ukulele that’s playing on shores surrounded by seashells and all my sadness is far away. Palm trees are present as they shade me from UV rays that won’t let me stay on the sand for too long. All memories that live close to my heart and the longing for a summer love at my side. It’s a sweet and innocent sentiment he shares in that desire. Because when everything is going wrong, why not have the love of your life next to you in those moments. The song made me want it all back.
Love, Longing, and loneliness but also comfort and calm . Like a bittersweet summer rain. I want people to feel ok in the calm and the inevitable loneliness that tends to come in the eye of a storm. I want people to relate to the desire and craving, of having that one more moment. One more touch. One more lazy day laying around in sweet nothings.” – Just J for CentralSauce (2020)
His vocals sound lazy but not without emotion. They’re delivered in a way that makes it seem like he’s just freestyling these thoughts which he admits to doing later in the song. It’s not without effort but without the seriousness that comes sitting down and trying to make something that’s grandiose. Just J is here now but has his head in the past because in the moment, it was better days. And while the world is on pause, the past seems better anyway.
Just longs for the love that lit up his days and it’s a sentiment that I can’t help but relate to. It’s not forever. The moment is fleeting because at the end of the day your head can’t remain in the clouds. But when your head can’t seem to drift, it isn’t too bad to daydream of the past as the sun sets on summer and the days get shorter. It just shows you’re getting older.
From Just J.
I had just come off the high of releasing my first single and having it featured in a magazine in France. I was in the daze of summer loving. It was the height of a weird and wild summer and as I felt the summer days slip away, so too did I feel a lovers embrace begin to slip away, and all I wanted in that limbo between Summer and Fall was for all of it to Stay.
Surprisingly rushed haha. I set myself a goal to release a new song by my birthday which gave me a little less than a month at the time. Stay was the melody that I kept returning to whenever I felt unsure of what to record and it was what was sitting in my heart most readily available once I hit the studio. We got the hook in one take. Everything seemed to feel right in the moment.” – Just J for CentralSauce (2020)
