In today’s age, technology has flooded our lives with content. Caught in the mire are modern musicians who champion an art form that’s more widely distributed than any other throughout human history. And we, more often than not, overlook the music created by unfamiliar faces because it’s challenging. We’d rather have an easy listen, a known quantity to skim through while we think about something else.
Hearing is easy, but listening is difficult. Welcome to “Why We Like It”, where we rebuke the trends in favor of thoughtful analysis and underknown sounds.
“Codeine” – CeddroDaGod
Listen On:
How We Found It
The submission was found on our official CentralSauce Submithub page and the track is produced by ‘level.’ CeddroDaGod reigns from Polk County, Florida. He’s been heavily dropping music on his SoundCloud since 2017 including his debut tape MOODSWINGS. He has stuck to individual releases since then and seems to be coming into his own in 2020.
Why We Like It
The song opens with an auto tuned melodic delivery of the word from the song title “Codeine.” After going through a day’s worth of submissions and hearing other great stuff from a few different genres, that simple melody was the one that stuck in my head. It was still there when I was drinking my morning coffee the next day. Being Florida based, CeddroDaGod’s style sits in the southeast trap aesthetic. His flow and beat selection reminds me of Gunna’s Drip Season 3 mixtape and there is a Playboi Carti-like vocal tone that exists in his sound.
What truly separates him?
CeddroDaGod has adept, and potentially surprising, conceptual songwriting ability. As the song begins with the line, “codeine, shorty tryna fuck me off a bean” you think it’s going to be a surface level song about drug use and emotionless sex. Then as the song progresses you realize he may be storytelling about a toxic relationship as he raps, “she take my soul before she leave me, believe me.” Still as a listener you think he will sit on this topic for only a second, based on the style, that he’s just a young kid overdramatizing his youthful relationships. Then he hits you with four lines that change your whole perception. He raps, “I don’t give a fuck if you bad for me…little too much till I OD… baby slow it down right on me…no I love it when you do me dirty.” You have a lasting realization that this kid has wildly clever and intelligent lyrical ability.
CeddroDaGod almost creates an illusion, or an extended double entendre. It is unclear if he is talking about having a toxic relationship with a woman or codeine itself. He continues to expand on the push and pull of this ordeal. In the end you are left with a melody that is lodged in your memory, and that CeddroDaGod has potentially lived through experiences with love and addiction that parallel in their detriment to his spirit. Listening to this song is a solid reconfirmation of the phrase, “don’t judge a book by its cover.” Don’t prejudge CeddroDaGod by his sound.
From CeddroDaGod
I did lean a few times to be honest. It just slowed me down and numbed me out. You know it’s bad, but it feels good. I’m more so comparing my lust for a girl, to an addiction. I say, “I want you, but you are bad for me.” Like a toxic relationship. Have you ever just been with a girl, you know she ain’t no good for you, but you stay with her anyway? I have. Like, the relationship is so bad, but those moments where it slows down, you kinda go “I like this feeling.” I don’t know if a girl is for me until she tries to hurt me. Maybe I’m crazy, but I’ve been with a woman who really tried to hurt me. That’s an overdose.” – CeddroDaGod for CentralSauce (2020)
