Anderson .Paak puts on one of the most captivating live shows in music today. The smooth-tongued soul king usually performs backed by his band, the Free Nationals – but stepped outside his comfort zone with an intimate set in London to celebrate the release of his grammy-nominated 2016 album “Malibu”.
Brandon Paak Anderson, better known by his stage name Anderson .Paak (formerly Breezy Lovejoy), is one of the most talented musicians to come up in the last decade. After getting his musical start drumming in his family’s church on Sundays, Paak quickly developed a passion for creating. His path to stardom was long and winding, including periods of homelessness and a stint drumming for American Idol contestant Haley Reinhart.

In 2014, Anderson .Paak released Venice, his debut album. The project caught the attention of Dr. Dre, who recruited Paak to perform on six songs on Dre’s 2015 album Compton. One year later, Paak became a household name with his sophomore album Malibu – one of the top albums of 2016. Malibu received raving critical acclaim, earning Anderson .Paak a place on the 2016 XXL Freshmen list along with an official deal with Dr. Dre’s label, Aftermath Entertainment.
Anderson .Paak’s Rare Boiler Room Set
To promote Malibu’s release, Anderson .Paak made an appearance at London’s Boiler Room, a venue legendary in the UK’s underground music and electronic music scene over the last decade.
In the video we see a rare, raw side of Anderson .Paak, who performs in an intimate space that would scare off many rappers. But .Paak is no mere rapper. After walking out with vocal chords blazing and his hood up like a fighter, he goes on to show out. Turns out his impressive vocal range and on-stage charisma is undeniable even without his legendary band The Free Nationals behind him. Paak also pays tribute to Dr. Dre himself with a cover as his second-to-last track of the performance.
