In today’s age, technology has flooded our lives with content. Caught in the mire are modern musicians who champion an art form that’s more widely distributed than any other throughout human history. And we, more often than not, overlook the music created by unfamiliar faces because it’s challenging. We’d rather have an easy listen, a known quantity to skim through while we think about something else.
Hearing is easy, but listening is difficult. Welcome to “Why We Like It”, where we rebuke the trends in favor of thoughtful analysis and underknown sounds.
“Questions” — AMEENAH
How We Found It
Singer-songwriter AMEENAH hands us a questionnaire vis our SubmitHub inbox. Hailing from Birmingham, the LA of the UK, AMEENAH’s sound is influenced by hip hop, soul and spoken word. She finds her pride in her words and transparency.
Why We Like It
Misogyny. The challenge a woman faces at birth from a patriarchal society. Being a woman comes with a prerequisite of struggles once you come into this world. And with that, comes a constant awareness that you could be in danger just because of your gender. Whether you’re born with it, or transition to it. The rules are set and the consequence of breaking or going outside these standards can and will cause women to be ostracized for going against the grain. Thanks to the first, second, third, and now, fourth wave of feminism, things have changed tremendously but there is still work to be done. Because even today, people will still have their set of thinking that women should be a certain way. To me, especially the women of color. On AMEENAH’s “Questions”, she lays out some of the inquiries asked because of preconceived notions placed on them.
Over looped, slow horns and drums that are jazzy and cold, AMEENAH stands on her podium to lay out her grievances on how people influenced by a patriarchal society try to police her thoughts and actions. Living in a world like this can be exhausting, affecting her whole day and demeanor. How can you shine your light when the world you want to share it with keeps you in the shade? She opens the track lamenting.
Show me what’s beneath your surface / Sorry but not today, I’m feeling worthless / Feeling pressure to always be perfect / Let me tell you I don’t want to be perfect, no / I just wanna be worth it / Share my worth with the world” – AMEENAH “Questions” (2020)
Through it all, she perseveres and strives for change in the midst of divisive waves. Her pen game on the track finds her looking for solutions and analyzing the state of things, singing, “I think it’s evil that we are not equal and we didn’t make any of the rules.” Her flow is poetic but firm, speaking to an audience that has refused to see her for who she is. It’s a depressing thought, one which makes me wonder what I could do to make change, as this woman stands on her own two feet, ready to look people in the eye every time one of these questions are asked.
It’s inspired by the pressures women experience in society, we’re often judged by our appearance and for ‘what we have to offer.’ It’s about acknowledging that perfection doesn’t exist and there’s so much more to people than what they look like on the outside. You didn’t choose the body you’re in, you’re just the soul that lives within.” – AMEENAH for CentralSauce (2020)
The next time I look beneath the surface, I’ll make sure to see any person for who they are, rather than who they appear to be. Womanhood is more than skin deep and I can see AMEENAH knows who she’s trying to be despite what the world chooses to believe.
The creative process was really fun but quite challenging, this is because I originally recorded this song as a freestyle, so when it came to recording it as a full song, I had to change the structure and some of the lyrics. Gifted, the producer I worked with was great, he really helped to bring my vision to life and created an amazing beat. I will always speak up for what I believe in and stay true to myself, even when it feels difficult to.” – AMEENAH for CentralSauce (2020)
